How to read this map
The freezing level is the estimated altitude of the 0°C isotherm in the free atmosphere. It is not the same as the snow line, because humidity and the lower-atmosphere temperature profile affect precipitation type.
- A lower freezing level increases the potential for icy mountain surfaces when moisture is present.
- Snow can fall below the 0°C level, particularly during heavy precipitation or through a dry lower layer.
- Mountaineering and skiing decisions also require wind, cloud, precipitation and current local information.

Use the timeline to follow the rise or fall of the freezing level. Select a point for its estimated altitude in metres.
Important note: This is not a road-ice, avalanche or aviation-safety product. Conditions on slopes and in valleys can differ markedly from the model grid.
