Two successive disturbances carried very cold air from north to south. The second was stronger and produced snow even at low elevations and near the coast in eastern Greece.

- 22–23 Jan — The first disturbance affects northern and eastern districts.
- 24 Jan — The stronger second disturbance moves south and intensifies snowfall.
- 25–26 Jan — Snow gradually eases, but very low temperatures maintain frost and ice.
What happened in the atmosphere
Very cold air in the lower and middle atmosphere combined with moisture from the Aegean. Northeasterly flow rising over Evia and eastern Central Greece enhanced snowfall.
Surface temperature alone does not determine snow. The vertical temperature profile, moisture and precipitation intensity decide whether snowflakes survive to low levels.
What helps us interpret the event
- Check temperature at several atmospheric levels, not only at the surface.
- Distinguish snowfall, frost and road icing.
- Night-time minimum temperatures remain important after snowfall ends.
