Storm Daniel and the Thessaly floods, 2023
Daniel was a multi-day extreme-rainfall episode. The slow-moving system kept heavy rain over the same catchments while runoff accumulated across the Thessalian plain and around Lake Karla.

Ianos organised over the warm Ionian Sea and reached western Greece with strong winds and heavy rain. Moisture and rainfall then shifted towards central parts of the country.

Zorbas developed over the southern Ionian and showed tropical-like characteristics before affecting the Peloponnese and areas farther east. Its prediction carried substantial uncertainty in both track and intensity.

Heavy rain over small, steep catchments west of Athens produced very rapid runoff into built-up areas. The event is a clear example of a local flash flood with a disproportionately large impact.
